On June 19, 2023, Officer Engel responded to a disturbance call. He learned there had been a large
fight between two groups over the possession of a basketball. Once group was made up of families
from Iraq and Syria and the other of families from Afghanistan. All subjects were immigrants to
America and it was clear there was tension between the approximately 40 subjects living in close
proximity to each other. When Officer Engel spoke with the involved parties it became clear that there
was a need for more sports equipment for the children. Officer Engel utilized the Community Care
Fund to purchase 6 basketballs and 6 soccer balls and distributed them between the two groups.
On June 21, 2023, Sergeant Littrell received a call from the principal at Ridgeview Elementary School
requesting KPD assist a family with students who attend her school. Sergeant Littrell was aware that
family had received assistance recently. Sergeant Littrell contacted the mother, who told him she was
waiting for services and had been working with Impact Compassion to obtain permanent housing. She
gave Impact Compassion permission to speak with Sergeant Littrell. Impact Compassion confirmed
that she was one of their clients. They told Sergeant Littrell she was in the process with Benton County
Housing Resource Center (HRC). Sergeant Littrell contacted HRC who confirmed that she had just been
approved housing benefits and only needed to locate an apartment with vacancy. Benton HRC pays to
get people into permanent housing. Sergeant Littrell reserved the 6-night hotel stay to house the
mother and her three kids (ages 7, 6, and 4).
